Elephants Ploughing Rice Paddies in Thailand

The use of elephants to plough the rice paddies is not common in Thailand as the Water Buffalo is the beast of choice for most. The Karen tribe up near Chiang Mai however use and have used elephants in farming for hundreds of years. The ground in the Karen tribal areas is often too hard and tough for the Water Buffalo so the Elephant is ideal. The Elephants were previously captured from the forest just for the ploughing season and then released again afterwards.
