Friday, September 23rd, 2011 - Optional Trip to Tucson’s Reid Park Zoo

Reid Park Zoo provides participants to observe African Elephant Footcare.


Limited to 25 participants- preference given to elephant caregivers


Workshop cost- $200.00, additional $35.00 for optional trip to Reid Park Zoo on Saturday. Payable at registration. Please bring cash, check, or money order with you. Do not mail in fees. Fees to be charged during registration on grounds at the zoo September 19th, 2011.

Monday, September 19th, 2011.

8:00 Registration, handouts – CD with course notes and materials.

8:30 – 8:45 Welcome, introductions, meet the elephant management staff.

8:45 – 9:00 Introduction of participants to one another.

9:00 – 9:15 Overview of the course.

9:15 – 9:30 AZA perspective on elephant care – Bert Castro CEO

9:30 - 10:30 A Day in the Life of an Elephant

10:30 – 10:45 Break

10:45 – 12:00 Tour of the facility

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 - 3:00 Habitat Design that supports foot health

9:30 – 10:45 General foot-care overview

10:45 – 11:00 Break

11:00 – 11:30 Tools used in foot care (proper care and maintenance)

11:30 – 12:00 Body conformity as it applies to overall health

12:00-1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 2:00 Slideshow/discussion of Foot Trimming

2:00 – 3:30 Practical Demonstration of Foot Trimming- Front Foot

  • Training in protected contact
  • Physical examination of the foot
  • Things to look for as potential problems

3:30 - 3:45 Break

3:45 – 5:00 Practical Demonstration of Foot Trimming- Back Foot

10:15 – 12:00 Practical demonstration of Radiographing Elephant Feet

1:00 – 1:30 Causes of Foot Problems in Elephants

1:30 – 2:00 Foot abscesses and what to do about them

2:00 – 3:00 Medical Treatment and Management of selected foot conditions

3:00 – 3:15 Break

3:15 – 4:30 Practical Demonstration of Abscess Trimming

4:30 – 5:00 Questions/Discussion about Abscesses

8:30-10:00 Presentation and Discussion of visiting facilities foot-care issues and/or behavioral issues
