Take A Picture - Save A Rhino

Take A Picture - Save A Rhino

Hello Rhino Enthusiasts! It's that time of year again!

The International Rhino Keeper Association (IRKA) is holding its annual rhino photo contest, where the top photos will appear in the 2014 Rhino Conservation Calendar. In 2013, we sold out of all 500 calendars in 3 months’ time. We are hoping to order more calendars this year to keep up with the demand. The calendars were sold literally all over the world & we are expecting sales to continue to increase!

The International Rhino Foundation will also be assisting the IRKA by advertising the calendar on their website and newsletter. The IRKA has produced the Rhino Conservation Calendar for two years now and has raised close to $20,000, all of which went directly to rhino conservation projects thanks to sponsorships.

I hope you choose to be a part of this amazing collaboration again! So where will the funds raised go this year? At the Sumatran Rhino Crisis Summit, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia agreed for the first time to collaborate on saving the Critically Endangered Sumatran rhino, the smallest and last form of the two-horned rhino in Asia that has lived on the planet for 20 million years.

The Sumatran rhinos were once widespread throughout Southeast Asia, occurring from the foothills of the Himalayas southward to the extreme southern tip of Sumatra. However, hunting for horn and other body parts, in combination with the loss of tropical forest habitat, has resulted in the disappearance of Sumatran rhinos from at least four countries. The last of the wild populations of the Sumatran rhino, now amount to fewer than 100 rhinos in total. They survive on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and in Sabah, Malaysia on the northern part of the island of Borneo. Experts, who gathered at the Summit, proposed a two-year emergency action plan as an immediate follow-up to the event.

The funds raised from the sale of the 2014 Rhino Conservation Calendar will go towards the resources needed to improve rhino surveys, security and monitoring of the Sumatran rhinos. Only 1 submission per photographer (3.9 mega pixels or 250 pixels per inch). Please fill out the Contest Form below and send with your submission.
